How Long Does It Take to Get Over a Breakup?

How long does it take to get over a breakup

Right now, you might be wondering how long it will take to get over your breakup.

Maybe it happened last week, and you feel like you’re dying inside or maybe it happened two years ago and you can’t seem to let go.

So how much longer will it take to kick the depression, social-media stalking and missing to the curb?

How long will it be before you stop thinking about your ex and move on?

The Magic Formula

I really wish I could give you a magic formula like Sex and the Cityor How I Met Your Mother, buuuuuuuut unfortunately, we’re not baking a cake here.

Unfortunately, when it comes to relationships, we wish there were a formula for everything

  • How to get the guy
  • How to keep the guy
  • How to get him to commit to you
  • How to get back together after the breakup
  • How to get him to ask you to marry him
  • How to convince him to buy you the ring you want
  • Where to live, when to have a baby (and how to get him to pick his socks up off the floor, help me pleeeease!)

As you already know every situation is different.

Many times it depends on how the relationship ended, why it ended, who ended it and how long you lingered after the relationship was over wondering if the relationship was really over.

Unfortunately, you won’t get over your ex like a machine wipes its memory clean.  You can’t just erase him from your life, even though you might wish you could.

Some part of  him will always be around.

It’s like fingerprints.  Even after you’ve left, the fingerprints remain.  Remnants of him will stay with you.

You won’t unlearn the lessons you learned from the relationship.  You won’t forget the good times you had together.  You won’t stop knowing the people you met because of your relationship with them.

You can’t erase his impact on your life or the way he showed you your first glimpse of the ocean.  In the same way, he can’t erase your impact on his life either.

All of these things are constant reminders that at one point in time in your life, they were a significant piece of the puzzle.

Getting Over Your Ex

“Getting over him” is figuring out what to do with those memories.  It’s figuring out what usefulness they have in your life.  It’s figuring out what lessons you were meant to learn from them.  It’s figuring out what hurt you need to let go, what bitterness you need to release and what jealousy you need to get beyond.

When you figure this out, you’ll “get over” the relationship.

The difference between lingering in relationship purgatory and moving on is what you do with those memories, how you react to those relics and how much you allow the painful situations from the past to affect you.

You may continue to feel sadness from time to time.  You may still feel a sense of loss. The difference is that you develop the tools and the coping mechanisms to deal with it all.
